I hope you’ve been studying hard, because in my last post I promised you a quiz on dangling modifiers. The thing is, Grammar Bytes already has this really fun quiz on modifiers that includes cool graphics and “prizes,” so I’m going to send you over there.
A dangling what, you ask? And yes, you read the title correctly. Dangling modifiers are a common but difficult-to-spot grammar issue that are, fortunately, easy to fix.
There are so many rules–and so many different style guides with their own unique sets of rules–that I’m only going to address one today: AP. This post gives you the lowdown on the AP’s guidelines for writing out numbers versus using numerals.
Just to be clear, I’m talking about position titles, not book/movie/article titles (already covered that–at least in part–here).
So, titles: to capitalize or not to capitalize?
Maybe you’re slapping your forehead right now, saying “duh!” or even “der!”
You’re likely thinking,
This is SO OBVIOUS. At least explain semi-colons to me or something else useful.
